Abstract
Tolkappiyam is the earliest and most authoritative grammatical treatise of the Tamil language, traditionally attributed to the sage Tolkappiyar. It is a comprehensive work that integrates grammar, literature, culture, ethics, and social norms, making it not only a linguistic manual but also a record of ancient Tamil civilization. Tolkappiyam also establishes rules for poetic composition, literary aesthetics, and cultural practices, preserving insights into the ethics, behavior, and civilization of the ancient Tamils. Its antiquity, systematic structure, and holistic approach make it a cornerstone of Tamil language and literature, underscoring the Tamil language’s status as a classical and sophisticated language.
