Abstract
Shashi Deshpande's *That Long Silence* is a seminal work in Indian
literature that delves into the complexities of gender roles and the silencing
of women's voices within a patriarchal society. This paper explores how
Deshpande portrays gender roles through her protagonist, Jaya, and other
characters, illustrating the struggle for identity and autonomy faced by women.
The analysis reveals the intricate interplay between tradition, culture, and
individual aspirations, highlighting Deshpande's critique of societal norms and
her call for a redefinition of gender roles.
